Last Fall (2010), we recieved a call from a customer that had a project that she was unable to find anyone that was willing to take on for her. After a brief discussion on the scope of work she wanted to have done, I told her I'd come out and take a look it at and see what I could come up with for her. A few days later, I arrived at the customers residence to find the pieces of the project and the location she wanted these peices installed. What I found was 2 pieces of a custom formed stained glass mosaic that had been in her family for over 40 years. It had been made by her great uncle and installed in her late parents home untill they recently sold it. She had since had it shipped out here to Arizona, and she wanted to have it mounted on the wall in her current home with a light behind it. Not only was the existing piece now in two pieces, which Id have to put back together, but it was very heavy, not to mention having to make the light feature accessable for future bulb replacement.
After about a week and a half of tossing ideas around with Leroy, our custom cabinet maker, we came up with the idea you now see as a finish product. A custom solid Oak frame secured to the existing home interior framing recessed into the wall with a removable back. It has 4 heavy duty ball bearing hinges to hold the custom reinforced door frame in which the custom stained glass mosaic is wrapped. It has a pin lock at the top so not just anyone can open as well as a safety chain so it wont open beyond a certain point due to the extreme weight. To finish off this custom creation, it is lighted with approx. 36 feet of rope lighting custom wrapped to follow the design of the stained glass mosaic on a dimmer switch.
